Fridges aren't the same temperature all over. Store each food in its ideal zone to cut waste and keep things fresh.

Top
Shelf
Leftovers, drinks & ready-to-eat
Most stable temp. Cooked food, leftovers, herbs, packaged snacks and drinks. Nothing that needs the deepest cold.
Middle
Shelf
Dairy & eggs
Milk, yogurt, cheese, butter for daily use and eggs (in their carton), steady cold keeps dairy at its best.
Lower
Shelf
Meal prep & grab-and-go
Batch-cooked meals, portioned lunches and marinating dishes at eye level so they get eaten first.
Bottom
Shelf
Raw meat, poultry & fish
The coldest zone. Keep on the lowest shelf on a tray so drips can't reach food below. Sealed until you cook.
Crisper
Drawers
Produce, split by humidity
High humidity
(vent closed): leafy greens, herbs, broccoli.
Low humidity
(vent open): apples, pears, ripening fruit.
The Door
warmest spot
Condiments & hardy items only
Ketchup, mustard, dressings, jams, juice and water. The door warms up every time it opens, never store milk, eggs or raw meat here.
Why It Matters
Set it to 37 °F (3 °C).
Cold enough to slow spoilage, not so cold food freezes.
Leave room to breathe.
Air needs to circulate, a packed fridge cools unevenly.
Bin it up.
Clear bins group like items and pull out for easy cleaning.
Front row = eat first.
Put the oldest items up front so nothing hides and spoils.
5-Minute Weekly Cleanout
before grocery day
Toss anything past its use-by date
Move soon-to-expire food to the front
Wipe spills & sticky shelf spots
Rinse produce drawers, dry well
Consolidate half-empty jars & bottles
Jot leftovers to eat this week
Set Up a Meal-Prep Zone
grab-and-go
Keep one clear bin for portioned lunches and snacks you can grab without thinking.
Store cut fruit & veggies in view at eye level, visible produce actually gets eaten.
Label meal-prep containers with the date made so nothing lingers too long.
Reserve a shelf edge for a "use me first" tray of leftovers and open items.
An organized fridge isn't about perfection, it's about seeing what you have, so good food gets eaten instead of forgotten.
