NTN Registration in Pakistan

FBR charges nothing for an NTN, and for a salaried person with no business the registration needs no attachments at all, so this is a service for the cases where it is not that simple: a business with premises to evidence, a partnership or company whose principal officer has to deal with the Regional Tax Office, or an IRIS account that exists but never became a registration. We complete Form 181, confirm the order granting it, and leave you knowing what the number now obliges you to do.

Scope

What'sincluded

Everything below is in the standard engagement. Anything outside it is agreed in writing before the work starts, never after.

  • NTN registration for salaried individuals, sole proprietors, AOPs, companies and not-for-profits
  • IRIS account created or recovered, and Form 181 completed and submitted, which is the step that actually registers you
  • The registration order confirmed in IRIS, rather than the account alone taken as proof
  • Business premises evidence prepared for a sole proprietor: letterhead, a recent paid utility bill, and tenancy or ownership proof
  • The Regional Tax Office process handled for an AOP or company, whose principal officer FBR requires to register in person
  • Your status checked afterwards, and the duties registration brings explained, including the NTN a business must display

Who this is for

Built for three situations

  • Freelancers and sole proprietors
  • Partnerships and new companies
  • Anyone stuck partway through IRIS

Process

How thisactually runs

  1. Which registration

We confirm what you are registering as. An individual, a business individual, an AOP and a company each need different evidence, and only an individual can finish entirely online.

  2. Evidence

We gather only what FBR asks for your category, and check the one requirement that stops most applications: a mobile number registered against your own CNIC.

  3. Form 181

IRIS account created, Form 181 completed and submitted with its attachments, or the Regional Tax Office visit prepared for an AOP or company.

  4. Confirmation

We check IRIS for the order granting registration and send you the NTN certificate, with a note on what the registration now requires of you.

Questions

AboutNTN Registration

  • Does FBR charge a fee for an NTN?

No. The statutory fee was removed when the Finance Act 2008 substituted Part IX of the Income Tax Ordinance, and the current section 181 has no fee provision. What anyone charges you, us included, is a service charge for doing the work, and for a salaried person with no business that work is simple enough to do yourself. Our guide on getting an NTN walks through it.

  • Is my CNIC already my NTN?

The number, yes. Section 181(4) makes an individual's CNIC their National Tax Number from tax year 2015 onwards. The registration, no. Until Form 181 is submitted in IRIS and FBR issues the order granting it, you are not registered, which is why a person who has held a CNIC for years can still be treated as unregistered.

  • I made an IRIS account. Am I registered?

Not necessarily, and this is where most self-registrations stall. Creating the account and reaching the dashboard is not registration. FBR says a return cannot be filed until the registration application is submitted: in IRIS, that is the Form 181 task under Draft, and the proof is the registration order under Completed Tasks.

  • Can a company or partnership register online?

Not fully. FBR allows an individual to register through IRIS, but the principal officer of a company or an association of persons has to register through the Regional Tax Office. The exception is a company incorporated through SECP, where the NTN is issued as part of incorporation.

  • Does an NTN make me a filer?

No. Registration gives you the number; filing an income tax return is what puts you on the Active Taxpayer List. The two are separate acts, and the difference decides the withholding rates you pay on banking, property and vehicles.

  • Do freelancers need an NTN?

In practice, yes. Filing a return starts from a registration with FBR, and so does PSEB registration, which lists an NTN among its prerequisites and is what the reduced tax rate on IT export income depends on.
