Tax year 2027
Cash Withdrawal Tax Calculator
Section 231AB applies to non-filers only. The threshold is a trigger rather than a tax-free allowance: once the day’s cash passes it, the rate applies to the whole amount withdrawn.

Where these figures come from
- Statutory basis
- Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, as amended by the Finance Act 2026, for tax year 2027 (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027).
- Last checked against the statute
- by BarrioVibe, which files income tax returns through FBR IRIS.
These figures are an estimate computed from the rates above, not tax advice for your situation. Your return depends on facts a form cannot see, so treat the number as a starting point and speak to us before you file on it.

What thisdoes not cover
It is accurate for what it models, and everything below changes the answer. None of it can be handled by a form with a few fields in it.
- Every other withholding tax on a bank transaction, each of which has its own section and its own rate
- Whether you are actually on the Active Taxpayer List, which is checked against FBR’s own list rather than against whether you filed
- The annual return this is adjustable against, which is where the deduction is claimed back
- Withdrawals in a currency other than rupees, and transactions that are not cash
- Bank charges and any other deduction your bank makes for its own reasons
Questions
The questionspeople ask
Who pays tax on cash withdrawals in Pakistan?
Only non-filers, meaning people whose name is not on FBR’s Active Taxpayer List. A filer has nothing deducted under section 231AB, however much cash they take out.
How much is the cash withdrawal tax?
It is 0.8% for non-filers, and it starts once the cash you take out in a single day passes fifty thousand rupees. The rate was 0.6% until the Finance Act 2025 raised it.
Is the first fifty thousand rupees free of tax?
No. Fifty thousand is the point at which the deduction starts, not an amount that stays exempt. Once the day’s cash passes it, the 0.8% applies to the whole amount withdrawn rather than only to the part above it. Reading it as an allowance understates the deduction every time.
Does it apply to each withdrawal or to the whole day?
To the whole day. The threshold is the total of your cash withdrawals in a single day, so three withdrawals of twenty thousand rupees count the same as one of sixty thousand. Splitting a withdrawal does not avoid it.
Does it apply at an ATM?
Yes. What matters is cash leaving your account rather than which counter you use, so ATM withdrawals and cash taken out on a card count towards the same daily total.
Can I get this money back?
It is adjustable, which means it counts towards your income tax for the year and is claimed on your annual return. But you have to file to claim it. A person who never files never gets it back, and the money simply stays with FBR.
How do I stop the deduction?
File your income tax return so your name appears on the Active Taxpayer List. From then on you count as a filer and the deduction stops on every withdrawal. For anyone who handles cash regularly, that saving alone usually exceeds what filing costs.
